Undermount vs. Drop-In Sinks
The biggest decision is how your sink meets the counter. An undermount sink is mounted beneath the surface, so the countertop edge is the visible rim and you can wipe crumbs straight into the basin. A drop-in (top-mount) sink sets into the cutout with a rim resting on top of the counter.

Drop-in sinks do have practical upsides beyond simplicity: the rim covers the cut edge, so the cutout doesn't need polishing, and they can be a smart choice for laminate or tile transitions. For stone and quartz, though, most of our clients prefer the clean lines of an undermount.
How Cutouts Are Made
Sink and cooktop openings are cut during fabrication, based on your template and the exact model of your sink. For undermounts, the cutout edge is polished because it stays visible, and a reveal (how much counter overlaps the sink rim) is chosen for the look you want. Precise cutouts are one more reason the actual sink should be on site at templating.
Precision here really matters. An undermount that's set even slightly off can leave an uneven reveal, so cutting to the exact sink model in the shop, rather than freehand on site, produces a much cleaner result.
Faucet Holes and Accessories
Faucet holes are drilled to match your fixtures, so decide on your faucet and extras before fabrication. Common additions each need their own hole placed with the deck in mind.
- Faucet (single hole or a spread of three)
- Side sprayer or a separate pot filler
- Soap dispenser and hot or filtered water taps
- Air gap or air switch for a disposal or dishwasher
Plan your faucet layout with clearance in mind, too. A tall faucet needs room to swing beneath an upper cabinet or window, and a pot filler needs a supply line roughed in behind the wall before install.
How Cutouts Affect Layout and Strength
A sink opening removes material and creates a narrower, more delicate span, so fabricators plan support and often route seams near the sink, where the run is shorter and better supported.
