Porcelain vs. Quartz Countertops

Porcelain and quartz both look stunning on a countertop, but they are built differently and excel in different rooms. Here is how heat, UV, thickness, and everyday use set them apart.

Two Different Recipes

Quartz is engineered from ground natural quartz bound with resins, then pressed into slabs of a set thickness. Porcelain is made from refined clays and minerals fired at extreme temperatures, producing a dense, fully vitrified surface, usually sold as a large-format porcelain slab.

Both are nonporous and never need sealing, but the firing process gives porcelain some special properties that matter in a Florida home. Learn more in our guide to what a porcelain slab is.

Heat and UV

This is where porcelain pulls ahead. Because it is fired at high temperature rather than bound with resin, porcelain is highly heat resistant and completely UV-stable, so it will not fade in the sun. Quartz can scorch under a very hot pan and is not ideal in prolonged direct sunlight, where some colors may fade over the years.

  • Porcelain: excellent heat resistance, UV-stable, ideal for outdoors and sunny spots
  • Quartz: use trivets for hot pans, and best kept out of prolonged direct sun
  • Both: nonporous, stain resistant, and never need sealing

For a South Florida home with plenty of glass and sunlight, this UV difference is not a small detail. A quartz island next to a wall of windows can gradually shift color over years, whereas porcelain holds its tone indefinitely, which is a big reason porcelain dominates outdoor and sun-filled spaces here.

Thickness and Edges

Porcelain slabs are typically thin, around 6 to 12mm, which is perfect for cladding, walls, and lightweight installs, but a countertop wants a substantial edge. Fabricators create that with a mitered edge, folding the slab to form a thick 2cm or 3cm look. Quartz, by contrast, comes in standard 2cm and 3cm thicknesses straight from the factory.

Everyday Use and Cleaning

Both surfaces are easy to live with. Quartz is warm, forgiving, and the most popular choice for interior kitchens, striking a great balance of beauty and practicality. Porcelain is exceptionally hard and scratch resistant, though a sharp impact on an unsupported edge can chip it. Both clean simply with mild soap and water, with no sealing ever needed.

Quartz also tends to feel slightly warmer and softer underfoot for knives and glassware, while porcelain's glass-hard surface is more unforgiving but virtually impervious to scratching. Neither is fragile in normal use; the differences are at the margins.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose quartz for indoor kitchens where you want a warm, popular, low-maintenance surface at a standard thickness. Choose porcelain for outdoor kitchens, sunny rooms, cladding, and anywhere heat and UV resistance matter most.

Is porcelain more heat resistant than quartz?

Yes. Porcelain is fired at extreme temperatures and handles heat far better than quartz, whose resin binder can scorch under a very hot pan.

Can quartz go outdoors in Florida?

We do not recommend it. Quartz is not UV-stable and can fade in prolonged sun. Porcelain or sintered stone is the better outdoor choice.

Why does porcelain need a mitered edge?

Porcelain slabs are thin, so fabricators fold the slab at the edge, a miter, to create the look of a thick 2cm or 3cm countertop.
